Music Video Analysis

Bruno Mars Comparison - (16/10/15)

In conclusion, all four of Bruno Mars’ video’s I have analysed are performance based. This is a convention of music videos within the pop genre as this type of typology can be seen in other video’s I have analysed such as Jason Derulo’s “Trumpets” and Justin Bieber’s “What Do You Mean” to name a couple. This therefore is something we will definitely have to consider for our own music video as it incorporates Dyer’s ‘extraordinary’ paradox by portraying the artist as having raw talent. In terms of just the four Bruno Mars videos I analysed, I particularly like the fast paced editing featured in “Uptown Funk” which I have already discovered to be a genre convention. I specifically like the use of it in this video however because the cuts match different beats within the song, for instance in time with the clapping. This creates a really cool effect in which it looks like the characters on screen are in control of the cuts. This therefore is something that I would like to look into for our final production. I also really like the use of two different types of lighting to create glare however for completely separate reasons. In “Just The Way You Are” the natural light is used to make the love between Bruno and the female character seem angelic, suggesting they are the perfect couple. Whereas in “Treasure” artificial light is used to create a 60/70’s disco effect, similar to the time period that has inspired Bruno’s music. This highlights the importance of lighting and so therefore how we use it in our own music video is crucial to the success and professionalism of our final production.
