Print Media Text Analysis - (1/7/15)
On the poster of Wiley's the 'Snakes & Ladders' tour, Wiley is wearing gold chains and a gold watch. These connote that he is wealthy and has an element of gangster about him. This suggests that he is very popular to the audience and must be good, making them more likely to go and see him. He is also wearing a casual T-shirt and trainers, suggesting that he is a pretty chilled and laid back person, implying that he isn't flash to the audience. This is unusual for an artist of his genre, making him more likable. However he is also wearing smart trousers and a waistcoat, which adds and element of maturity and suggests that he is more sophisticated than his genre would have people believe. In terms of his non-verbal communication, the clenched fists connote violence, implying that he is capable of being violent, making the audience fear him a little. However this will be done because Grime artists are perceived as being tough and have to have that domineer in order to appeal to their audience. Most of the colour on the poster is either black or white as they are neutral colours meaning they suggest simplicity. The reason this is effective is because it tells the audience that its all about the music and there aren't any gimmicks. However the splash of purple brightens up the page enough that it still stands out. It also suggest wealth, ambition and implies that Wiley is very creative to the audience. Low key and high key lighting is used in the poster. Low key is used for the background so that it doesn't draw attention away for the key information and Wiley as its less important. Where as high key lighting is used to highlight Wiley as he is the artist and who the audience will be paying to see, so therefore he is very important.
Mise-en-scene
Typography
The poster features mostly San Serif however it also has a little bit of Serif. San Serif is used for the tour name, dates, venues etc. as its simple, so therefore its easy to read and the audience are more likely to remember it. Its also more modern so therefore it appeals to Wiley’s target audience of the youth. Serif is used for the name of the guest Stormzy. This was done to give him and Wiley separation as the audience is aware that they are different artists and that Wiley is the main event. Most of the typography is white because its easy to read on the black background. The purple font is also used for this, however it also makes the page more vibrant and eye catching, so therefore people are more likely to notice and remember it. Wiley's name is in a graffiti style which suggest he grew up on the streets and has been urbanised. It is also scratched, suggest that he could be scarred slightly, implying to the audience that he might have some insecurities behind his hard-man persona.
Positioning & Sizing
The artists name, the image of Wiley and the tour dates/venues all have a third of the page each. This suggests that they are all equally important and that the audience need to look at the entire poster. Wiley's name is large and at the top and centre of the poster. This is so that his name is the first thing that the audience notices, giving him name recognition which we gain him more fans as well as interest his followers already, widening his audience. However the sub-artist is a lot smaller and to the side which suggests to the audience that he is less important and that Wiley is the main event. Wiley himself is at the bottom left of the page but takes up a third of the page also. This is so the audience becomes familiar with how he looks and to confirm that it is actually him. The reason he doesn't take up all the page is because there is other information on the poster that is also important. Finally the dates/venues are at the bottom right, but large enough to still stand out, so therefore they are easier to read and remember.
Camerawork
The only camerawork used in the poster is a long shot of Wiley sitting on a stool. This is so that his entire body is in the poster so that the audience can see his domineer and body language. It also allows them to associate his name with his look, making him more recognisable. The long shot also suggest modesty as its not zoomed on his face, which makes him seem more genuine to his audience, increasing his likability
