Characters & Costumes

Props

Depicted in the eight images above are all of the props we are planning on using in our final video. Starting from left and moving to the right, the first image is the note that we will use in shots 1,2,3,4,5 and 6. This is supposedly from the female character who featured in the preliminary task (continuity) that all four of the band members slept with the previous night. However what the four characters don’t know is that it was actually meant for someone else which causes an upset at the end of the video. The note itself is very cryptic creating an enigmatic effect for the audience. The pink writing and lip print are also very feminine and imply that it has been done by a female character with the use of their lipstick. The next 3 images are of bathroom products used by Rob, Josh and Mohsin in shot  8. This adds an element of creditability and realism to the narrative portion of the video. This is also the same for the next 3 props which include the laptop, the bowl and spoon as well as the games console controller. These three props can be seen in shot 10 where myself, Josh and Mohsin are shot using the objects in the morning after we have finished in the bathroom. The inclusion of these props as mentioned before immerses the audience in the narrative of the video which relieves them from the everyday pressures of their lives (uses & gratifications theory: diversion). Finally on the far right we have the hairbrush which is used by the female character in shot 10 whilst she faces away from the camera brushing her hair. The purpose of the hairbrush is to do nothing but highlight the fact that this is a female character. This is whilst her identity remains hidden from the audience at this point in time which creates an enigma for the audience as they wonder if its the same female from the preliminary task and who wrote the note.

Above are the costumes that the characters will wear in our final music video. We constructed them based on the ones that we used in our preliminary task as our target audience highlighted the fact that they would like them to be kept similar along with the characters. This is because they then seem familiar to the audience allowing them to further discover their individual persona’s (uses & gratifications theory: personal relationships) as they can make comparisons to the previous video. It also means that the audience will be able to see themselves in one of the four characters and therefore build up a bond with them (uses & gratifications theory: personal identity).

In terms of the individual costumes my character is dressed very formally, sporting a navy suit and a black tie which have classy connotations. Although wearing a suit is very conventional for the pop genre as I have seen in music videos I have analysed such as Jason Derulo’s “Want To Want Me” and Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”, the use of a tie is less so as it contradicts the relaxed/fun feel associated with the pop genre (‘Difference is essential to the economy of a genre’ - Neale). However the character himself will be seen having fun by using positive non-verbal communication which will reinforce that he is in fact a character in a pop video. Rob’s costume is the most conventional of the four costumes as he is smart/casual. He is wearing a long grey blazer, with a grey t-shirt, black jeans, sunglasses and white trainers. These all have cool/stylish connotations, whilst the sunglasses also add a sense of mystery for the audience, making his character seem more enigmatic and suggesting that he is hiding his true personality behind the glasses (Dyer’s ‘stars are constructed’ theory). Moving on to Josh Calver’s costume, he is dressed as the stereotypical “nerd” wearing glasses, braces, a bow tie and a shirt. This “geek chic” is somewhat unusual within the pop genre, however the reason we have still incorporated it into our video is because it provides an element of humour, the like of which can be seen in Bruno Mars’ “The Lazy Song”. A slight comedic factor is something that not only we as a group consider to be important in the modern pop video, but also our audience as we discovered that the use of humour we used in our preliminary task was very appealing to them and something they would like to see in our final video. Finally I move onto Mohsin’s stereotypical “chav” attire which is very casual in comparison to the other costumes. The clothes he is wearing have very relaxed and care free connotations, similar to those of the pop convention. Our target audience can also relate to his casual attire as that style of clothing is commonly worn by younger generations, suggesting that he will appeal to the common value of youthfulness (Andrew Goodwin).

When it came to gaining permission to use the characters in our video that was extremely easy. The reason for this is because the main four characters in the video are all in our media group anyway so it was just a question of us all agreeing that we would participate in it. Taking into consideration the amount of fun we all had whilst we was constructing our preliminary task, the answer from each of us was inevitable going to be yes.
